The oldest reference dates the village from the year 806, found in a legacy that was left by the Count Guillaume (the future Saint Guilhem) to the Abbey of Gellone. The first name given to the village was Margarancia.

Margaussas comes from the Gaul name of Marga which means clay. As the village was situated on marsh land the ancient inhabitants were obliged to start draining it so the name of its main stream “le trénols” was kept. Right from the beginning of the 9th century, there was a church with a group of independent habitations that were more or less fortified.

It is not a coincidence that Saint Félix is where it is. There are numerous documents and ancient buildings to attest that its location was meant to encourage circulation between the Auvergne and the Mediterranean. It was an impossible place to bypass for someone going north who wanted to change horses before confronting the mountain, or when going down to the Mediterranean was in need of rest, after having crossed the dry lands of the Larzac.

Clinging to the first foothills of the plateau of the Larzac, the village today is still surrounded by vineyards of great quality classified AOC which represents its main resource (Wine Cooperative of Saint Felix/Saint Jean and private cellars).
