Mourèze, its Cirque and its history

A grandiose and imposing landscape, the dolomite circle of Mourèze came into being 160 million years ago out of the deposits of a warm and shallow sea.

Man has used this chaotic setting to his advantage since at least Neolithic times. Moreover, a small inhabited area had existed in an enclosed natural surrounding since the metal ages (the park Courtinals). The origins of the actual village are unknown (there must have been a Roman watchtower), however little by little it was around one of the biggest dolomite pillars that it was restructured. Since the 10th century at least, everyday life was organized around this ancient fortress and its church Sainte Marie.

The Roc Castel with the ruins of the chateau allowed not only control of the southern limits, bordering the city of Lodève (ancient bishopric) with those of Béziers, but also an old Roman itinerary connecting the middle basin of the Hérault with the hills of the Orb. This old fortified town which expanded and changed all along the Middle Ages, passed into the influential sphere of the landed gentry of Clermont and Lodève and was abandoned at the threshold of the modern era.

Mourèze, with its village clinging to the foot of the Roc, and its chateau, sits in one of the most chaotic and ancient landscapes that has been recorded in France.

To see

  • The fountains
  • The altar table
  • The church of Sainte Marie
  • The presbytery
  • The ancient oven
  • The chateau
  • The Cirque
  • The parc Cortinals

In the village, restaurants, craftsmen and hotels offer you a magical setting in which to have your holiday, a unique place. You could stay at the hotel “les Hauts de Mourèze” where you would have a splendid view over the Cirque and lunch could be at “Chez Eva” or at the bar ("buvette”) in the park Courtinals. Then you could leave with jams homemade by Flor from the Salagou.
