Fontès

The village of Fontès situated near the volcano Ceressou (207 m), dominates the valley of la Boyne. It gets its name from “font”, which in Latin, as in Occitan, signifies a spring, a fountain.

Fontès, inhabited since pre-historic times, has notably been enhanced by the great Gallo-Roman establishments that existed at the foot of the Ceressou (Les Pradesses, Carlencas…). In the 10th century, Fontès was under the Béziers jurisdiction of Cabrières.

The building of a château before 1080 AD encouraged the village to reorganize its settlements little by little, around the medieval fortifications. What is left of this stage in the actual topography of the place are the entrance gates to the village, and segments of the village walls. Apart from Saint Hippolyte, the wonderful 13th century church listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments, the municipality of Fontès also has in its surroundings the ruins of a second chateau (Mazers) that was run by the Viscounts of Béziers and then the Guilhem family of Montpellier, in the 12th century. Around the village are the summits, vestigial remains of ancient volcanoes which give to the vineyard cultivated just below, the reputed rosé of the Prieuré Saint Hippolyte de Fontès, well known to our area.
