Ceyras

The discovery of the vestigial “cabins” of Pioch Ceyradé in the 19th century confirmed the presence of humans at the end of the Neolithic time on the site.

The updating of diverse objects from the first centuries of our era and the study of the ancient terms used in the surroundings, have allowed for several “villas” or Gallo-Roman agricultural establishments to be situated.

A seigneury, created in the Middle Ages, was handed over to the barony of Clermont for tutelage in the 13th century. Following a union of marriage in the 14th century, it entered into the hands of the Lauzières family and remained there until the Revolution.

Having acquired complete autonomy in 1790 the municipality of Ceyras undertook, with the elected representatives of Clermont l’Hérault, the construction of a bridge on the Lergue. The creation of two railway lines in 1861 and 1866 brought a better service to the town by favouring a more important commercial and agricultural exchange.

After several centuries of mixed farming and the beginning of industrial activity, the main sources of production remain wine and olive growing.

On the outskirts of the village there are two chapels to discover. The chapel of Notre Dame d’Hortus (of gardens) right in the heart of the vines, which in previous times was the chapel of the gardeners, and the chapel of Leynerac on the edge of the river Lergue.
