Brignac

In the days of Antiquity, the land of Brignac was worked on by different farms, traces of which can be found in the plain of the Salamane at the south-west exit of the village and the Tanes Basses, under the intersection of the motorway.

These wine-growing properties, from the 1st and 2nd centuries of our era, had the advantage of being close to a large Gallo-Roman city where exchange and trade took place. They were situated on the left bank of the Rhonel at Peyre-Plantade, just over three kilometres north-west of the village.

In the Middle Ages, two churches had been built along routes which led across the Lergue. Saint-Martin-d’Aurelas, the most ancient, had been erected on a terrace overlooking the Rhonel, bordering an old road leading to Clermont l’Hérault. Still visible today are some of its vestiges. Saint-Pierre, the existing church of the village, marked out a north-south itinerary which made it possible to rejoin the lower valley of the Hérault.

In 1119 an official assembly held in Brignac (villa Abroniacum) gave the Abbey of Gellone (Saint-Guilhem-le-Desért) the right to charge taxes within the limits of the Bassin of Thau. In 1341 an agreement, made between the baron of Clermont and the inhabitants of Brignac, fixed the limits of the two jurisdictions.

They corresponded more or less to the actual limits of the village. The centre of the medieval village was constituted near its church and was dependant on the bishops of Lodève. It was probably encircled by a ditch or a small surrounding wall. From the 17th century and especially in the 19th century, the beginnings of a suburb started to develop along the road to Clermont.
